Applying to Study at an Australian University

Study in Australia application process

Australia has established itself as a major destination for international students, ranking third globally in terms of the number of students it attracts, after the UK and the US.

When it comes to applying to Australian universities, the procedure typically involves a direct application to the institute of your preference. SI-Australia offers free support for university applications, helping you select the right course and university.

Applying to Study in Australia

Select your desired course and university

Selecting the right course and university is crucial. Consider your interests, career goals, and the institution's reputation. Popular subjects like business, engineering, and computer science are widely available.

Research and compare universities based on rankings, faculty expertise, resources, facilities, and student experience. Review the course curriculum, electives, and internship opportunities to ensure they align with your goals. Consider location, climate, cost of living, proximity to major cities, and part-time work options. Thorough research and selection will enhance your academic journey and future career prospects in Australia.

Gather necessary supporting documents

As part of your application, you'll need to provide proof of English language proficiency and demonstrate how you will finance your studies. Australian universities commonly require additional paperwork, such as academic transcripts, course preferences, and, if relevant, a summary of employment experience.

Personal statements or essays are generally not required, but when applying for a student visa, you might need to explain why you want to study in Australia

Submit your application

There is no centralised application system for international students seeking admission to Australian universities. Each university must be applied individually, either online or by e-mail.

In the Australian education system, you have the choice to start university either in the first semester (March-June) or the second semester (July-October). To begin in the first semester, applications should be submitted by December. It is recommended to apply well in advance, as universities often respond with decisions in just a few weeks. The deadline for the second semester is usually in May. Additionally, a non-refundable application fee of AUD 50-AUD 100 must be paid before processing your application.

Apply for your Study Visa

To study in Australia, most international students require a subclass 500 student visa, except for research-driven postgraduate study. The visa costs AUD 1,080 for applicants over 18 and AUD 770 for those under 18.

To obtain the visa, applicants must demonstrate financial capability, including 12 months of programme fees, AUD 21,041 for living costs, and up to AUD 3,000 for travel expenses. Alternatively, an annual income of at least AUD 62,222 from parents or partners can be shown. Additional fees may be required for health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.

The visa application can only be made after accepting an offer from an Australian university, with the offer or enrollment letter provided.

Once you've completed the previous steps, obtained your Study Visa, and been accepted into your chosen course, you can begin your new adventure of studying in Australia.
