University of Sydney named most sustainable university in Australia

Published 06 December 2023

The University of Sydney ranked 7th globally and 1st in Australia in the 2024 edition of the QS World University Sustainability Rankings.

The University ranked first globally, (up from fifth last year), and first in Australia for Social Impact. Within that category, Sydney ranked number one globally on the Impact of Education indicator with a full mark of 100 points.

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott, said: “I congratulate our staff on our continuing high performance in the QS sustainability rankings which reflects our broad and global commitment to sustainability including through research and teaching, a responsible environmental footprint and good governance."

The QS sustainability ranking evaluates universities based on data from the QS World University Rankings, including information from surveys and research output related to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The ranking uses more than 75 data points, grouped into nine lenses, to rank institutions in three main categories: environmental impact, social impact, and governance.
