Three Australian universities have placed in the global top 20 of the 2024 QS World University Rankings.

The University of Melbourne ranked 14th in the world, an all-time high for any Australian university, whilst the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney tied for 19th.

The QS World University Rankings are the most used global rankings and are a measure of a university’s global reputation. For 2024, QS has implemented an enhanced methodology, introducing three new metrics; Sustainability, Employment Outcomes and International Research Network, as well as adjusting the weighting of existing indicators including Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, and Faculty Student Ratio.

The University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell said: “These new categories represent things that are important to students when they make decisions about where to study, so I’m very pleased that QS has rated the University of Melbourne so highly.”
